The podcast dedicated to helping service based entrepreneurs scale their online business to five figure months so they can soar into six figure years your host Brandi is a wife mom, and in less than one year created a six figure business and now she is spilling all her secrets. So you can do
Serve Scale Soar nation. I'm so excited that you are here today. And I'm so excited because I am tuning in with Jen and Jen is one of our amazing members of Serve Scale Soar and she's also a friend. Jen has had her business I'll let her tell you but I feel like we've been on this journey together and it's been been so fun, watching her business evolve and grow and scale. And we're going to learn so much today. So thank you so much for being here, Jen and just tell our listeners a little bit about yourself.
Alright, well, thank you so much for having me. I am a Facebook ad strategist for local businesses as well as memberships and course creators. I love helping businesses find their people online, whether it's locally or online. I just love connecting and I love marketing and sales and that's what I do.
Okay, and outside of your business, who are you?
I am a wife and a mom and a step mom. I have four kids 23,22, 20 and 15 and two dogs and love volunteering and that's pretty much me.
I love it. So tell us how long have you had your business? How did you start your business?
I started my business January of this year. As a result of I have gotten a work from home job at the end of last year as a result My husband and I were in a really dark place in our marriage. And he basically said he was leaving me and I needed to find a way to support myself after I'd been a stay at home mom for 15 years. And I'd gotten a job to work from home so I could still homeschool our youngest son. And I was working really, really hard for very little money. And I ended up working myself to exhaustion and I was really sick, ended up in bed, knowing I was going to get fired from my job, which pretty much would mean the end of my marriage. So I was laying there in bed and scrolling through my phone, because that's all I could do. And came across Abby Ashley's savvy systems took that just kind of knew that that was my next step. I wasn't sure how to do it, but that's what I did. And it was a couple of weeks later, I met Brandi, I applied to be your intern. And when I saw the world of Facebook ads, I knew this was what I was meant to do. So just a couple weeks into that I started Facebook ads that I've never turned back. And today I'm proud to say that I'm still very happily married it Facebook has really changed my life. Changed my marriage changed my family.
I love that. And so let's take a step back. So definitely finding, I love to hear how people find out about the virtual world. Because for me, it was very similar. Like, I'm not so much similar, but we like needed me to have a career because we went from two to one. And so we definitely needed one. And just scrolling and finding a program, and it's so awesome to see like other people in different situations, but like, we all end up in the same place, which is really cool. And so Jen did apply. So when I was looking for someone to start turning my YouTube videos, into blog post, I was the first position I was ever hiring for. and Jen was one of the three people I interviewed for the job, and we got off the call and I remember telling my husband, I was like, Oh, I wanted her to be the person but she's not the person because she's going to have her own business and She does not need to be working for me doing this. And I loved your honesty on the call. And I felt like I was probably really honest, because I was like, so because you got on a new world, you're like, I really want to learn Facebook ads, and I was like working with me, you're not gonna learn Facebook ads, you're literally going to be transcribing YouTube videos. And that's it. And we came to this mutual agreement. And then like, we've just been growing together. And it's been so fun to watch. But Jen was going to work for $15 an hour just because she wanted to like learn and I think that says a lot about you. My first client was also at $15 an hour just to get my start, and I learned so much from that. But I love that you are self aware enough to also know that once we got off that call, we were not going to be a good fit for each other.
No, no, we were not.
And y'all see how this works out because Jen kind of got off there and then like, Oh my gosh, we're not going to be a good fit. Or when I told her like, and it could have just been like, okay, she doesn't want anything to do with me now. But that wasn't the case at all. And it like, just because a job doesn't go your way. Or maybe the position you want. It doesn't mean you break ties with those people. It just means you find a new way to be in their life. And I think that's one of the things that you're so good at Jen is just being able to compartmentalize those emotions.
I agree and I it really taught me who you align yourself with is really how your business will grow. It's how you go from where you are now to where you want to be to build those genuine relationships that I remember coming to you going, Okay, I want to learn Facebook ads. So where do I go next? And whatever you told me, that's what I did.
Yeah, I love that. Okay, so you got started in February, February. February, okay of 2019. So we're recording in September of 2019 and You got started and then you started doing Facebook ads. And then where did your journey go from there? So I
took record already its foundations course to begin with, because that was the only thing that was available at that time. I was waiting for ads managers to come open, but that wasn't available. So I went ahead and took foundations. And I started doing ads for local businesses, which went really, really well. I my first two campaigns, I ran for free just to get experience, they just paid for ad spend. I immediately started getting results, but I have 20 years of sales and marketing experience. So I brought all of that to the table with me. So once I got to May of this year, I was making about $3,000 a month and that was after taking your LinkedIn course, as a matter of fact, that's where I started. And I started connecting with local businesses. Got to the $3,000 mark pretty quickly, and then was kind of stuck. I was kind of working all the time for local businesses, which I loved, but I saw a lot of scope creep so I was doing a lot of extras that weren't Like in addition, but I wasn't charging. And then I joined Serve Scale Soar and in May of this year, and streamlined all of my systems. And that allowed me to kind of scale much faster. Like, I think the next month after that was my first $5,000 month. And then now I am four months later, celebrating my first five figure month with just a little over 12,500
as incredible. That's so incredible. So one thing that I think it's a little bit different from most is you started, like niche down already. You were like, I am doing Facebook ads. I'm doing local at the time. And I think that's so unique to you because most service providers me included, we start with doing all the things. And so for you, it was like okay, I'm doing, I'm already niche down, but then it sounds like you had to get those systems in place to really be able to scale. So tell us about what systems you have in place and what those look like
So for me, when I first started my business, I was kind of all over the place as far as organization. I had things written on post it notes on my calendar, my planner, my phone. And going through the five figure framework, I learned how to build my system. So everything is run through Dubsado. Everything is automatic, I have Clickup that I use for all of my daily tasks. And that kind of keeps me organized to know what needs to happen next, and it helps me keep everything completed and I know where to go and look. So it helps me take on more clients and do a better job for them.
I love that and so, and for everyone listening dubsado and clickup are the two programs I recommend to streamline your system so you can scale without hiring a team and we will link up to the episode where I talked about those two programs. But listen, she is keeping it super simple to software that she's using. Not hundreds, not thousands, and I'm guessing if you're using clickup and dubsado then your monthly expenses are probably under $35. When it comes to those software's it is, yep, my monthly expenses. I have QuickBooks too. So it's less than $75 a month for all of my overheads. That is all I have. And y'all she's having $12,500 a month like insane. Like that is the power of a service based business and running your business lean. You don't need all the extras, you don't need all the bells and whistles, you just need to simplify. And that's when you can scale. So I love that. So I know you said you had done the LinkedIn and LinkedIn course used to be by itself. Now it is inside Serve Scale Soar So tell us about finding clients on LinkedIn.
So on LinkedIn, I followed your framework. I spent the first couple of weeks just connecting, I searched by business owner, and my superpower is very much in person networking. So I knew if I could get in front of the people, I could sign them as clients. So what I did was I would just spend hours every night like in bed scrolling through and just connecting and connecting and connecting. And then when I would connect with them, if they met my ideal client avatar, which I wanted to work with health and wellness experts, so I excited chiropractors, I signed a yoga studio, I signed a hypnotist, all within that first couple of weeks of starting really starting my business because of LinkedIn.
I love that. Okay, so were you meeting these people in person? Did you do your discovery calls on zoom? Were they local to you or just local businesses in general,
at the beginning to help build my confidence because I knew where my strengths lie with in person meetings, they were all local and I met them in person.
I love that because a lot of listeners listening probably don't meet their clients in person. So kind of like tell us what is that experience like actually knowing knowing your clients like what did you do when you met with them.
I usually meet them at a Coffee shop or their office, they become like my family, I would just explain how Facebook ads can help them grow their business and how it can help them connect them with their audience. So when I would talk with them, we would talk a lot about defining their client. Because a lot of companies I found they don't really know their people. So when you ask them questions, and they really had to think about it, it helped them form clarity to which then helped me as well. But we got big, it would get so excited to be like, yes, these are the people I want to focus on. And as I'll never forget, I had a chiropractor, who had just over the years, started doing all of the things and meeting all of his patients. And he learned he really loved families. And so we really marketed to families and him one year, actually in less than three months, his client load had doubled. So his revenue skyrocketed. But because of the way he was able to meet his needs of the families, his workload decrease because they all came in at one time, and it's a Happiness soared because we connected him with his people.
I love that that is so cool. And I think there's a lot to be said about meeting your clients in person when you can. And knowing that just because you're working virtually doesn't mean that you can't work within your community. And LinkedIn is such a powerful tool for that. And we will link up to our LinkedIn episode that's talking about how to market yourself on LinkedIn. And then we'll also link up to the free training that I have on optimizing your LinkedIn profile which is part of the course that Jen took so we'll definitely get that. Okay, so I love this. So you started out sick and now you like quickly get to 3000 and now we're in September, and you are you know, at over 12,500 which is incredible. Hit that five figure months. But I know people are going to want to know what have been some of your biggest challenges that you faced during this time.
One of my biggest challenges was sharing my wins. It was a mindset issue for me. Because just the way that I was raised and my friends, you know, you always hear the saying that your net worth is equal to your network and my network, I still love them, but they were just at a different level than me. And so I would feel guilty about succeeding. And like a lot of people I know fail, like they fear failure, but I actually feared success. And I think that mentally that held me back at the beginning, but coming into Serve Scale Soar, I got to be around so many other people who were in the same boat as me. So we were all cheering each other on to achieve our dreams, and to go past the five figure marks.
And I think that's so important to find people that are really your people, because sometimes it is so hard for the offline world to understand what we do, but then also, depending on your background, and I know for me, it's hard to work. Maybe you Less, necessarily and make more. Because I know for me, my parents are the hardest working people. And I make way more working way less. And sometimes I even have that guilt come up. So there's no way I'm going to go celebrate my wins even though they cheer me on. All along the way. There's some wins that like, I just don't, I can't share because it feels like I'm bragging. And so I totally get where you're coming from. And I think a lot of people feel that way too. And that's why I always want there to be a place for us to win and celebrate because when you win and celebrate your even the smallest wins, it helps your brain development, it helps build your confidence. And so it's not only important for you to celebrate your wins for you, but one thing we talked about in Serve Scale Soar, it's also important for other people, because they can see that it's possible. So I think that's definitely something that a lot of people are struggling with. So how do you think that have you been able to overcome that feeling?
Well, probably it's within serve scale soar, sharing the little wins. So building up the milestones, I didn't start out I'm, I'm such a private person. Anyway, I'm such an introvert, that it was really hard for me to share anything and to share a big number like this month being at 12,500. That was a really hard thing. And I don't think that I could have done that four months ago. Actually, I know, I couldn't have done that four months ago. So it was sharing the little wins going, you know, signing the first client, getting the first discovery call that kind of stuff.
Yeah, and those small wins, or what adds up to your big victories. And I can just say, because I've been with you on this journey, as I'm so proud that you're on this podcast saying the 12,500 and just knowing that you're doing this because you know, it's going to inspire other people. It's not for your ego, it's to help. And we chatted about this, and I'm so appreciative that you're here and that because celebrating this fall winter able to get on here and celebrate your big one. So what have you had any other challenges that you've had to face and overcome?
Probably my health actually trying to balance taking care of myself. I think as entrepreneurs, we're so focused on building the business and serving our clients that we put their needs above our own. And I had to find a balance between taking care of myself taking care of my family and taking care of my clients and being able to be everything for everyone.
And so what are some things that you've implemented to make sure that you're putting yourself in your health first,
I work out every morning. Regardless, I don't check my email before I already go to the gym. So I just make sure that I make my health a priority. I also started Hello Fresh. So all of my bills are delivered to me, which has helped tremendously I started realizing that my health was a priority because it was something I couldn't get back. So I was willing to pay for some of the extra things to make sure that that's happening for me.
No, I think that's great. And I included struggle with that I'm still struggling with that the balancing act, we have just started ordering a meal delivery service to, I think we go back and forth between Hello Fresh and something else. And for us, it's more of a convenience factor. But I definitely like not eating out and things like that instead of having those fresh meals on the table. And so just making those little tweaks and I think the tweaks that you're making are things that we can all make. And so I love that you're not like I'm working out all day long or anything like that. It's like going to the gym in the morning and I have some fresh meals on the table. So nothing crazy. I love that. Okay, so what has been your biggest one so far and your journey,
meeting some amazing clients that have just become like a family to me. In fact, one of my clients even this morning, I was really nervous about coming on this podcast and they knew that I was coming on and they were so encouraging and My clients are like my family, like, I love getting to know them and helping them and seeing them grow and just being able to make a difference in their businesses.
I love that. And one thing that when you really get clear on who you want to serve, you can start finding those clients that are like family, but then when you build those relationships, the referrals that will come in from those are like gold, like they will be your best referrals that you get, because you built a really solid relationship. And that's so important to your business. So I love that you intentionally work on building those relationships.
I do. I love building relationships. I love building relationships, even within the Serve Scale Soar community.
I love it. Okay, so what has been an online service provider, hitting your first five figure month done for you and done for your family?
It's given me confidence I never knew I had before I started Facebook ads. My kids laughed at me. I was not talking logical at all, building a website took me two weeks, and it wasn't even good. I didn't have a Facebook page. I didn't have an Instagram page. Even right now, at the time of the recording. I have 78 followers on my Instagram page. So becoming an online service provider. I have come so far, if I can do it, anybody can do it seriously. And it's just changed my life. Like it changed my marriage. It saved my marriage, actually, because as I grew as a person, my marriage was able to grow as well.
I love that. And yes, I'm a big proponent of not worrying about having big vanity numbers. When I hit six figures, I remember I was looking at the numbers. And I was like, wow, I have 430 followers on Instagram and like 123 on my Facebook business page, your numbers do not matter. What matters is the relationships that you're building along the way and your marketing minutes and your discovery call conversions. But all those other vanity numbers do not matter to your Success. So I love that. Okay, so are you ready for rapid fire? I think so let's do this. Okay, so what is the favorite part of your business? I liked I'm not ready.
My favorite part of my business is helping my clients I love seeing their business grow and soar and helping them find a super fans. I love that.
Okay, so what is your favorite software or tool that you use and you would not be able to do this business without dubsado hundred percent? I swear it up solder needs to pay me. Okay. So what is the best conference virtual or live that you've ever been to?
I've not been to a conference yet. I'm going to Amy Porterfield conference this fall the entrepreneurship experience. I'm looking forward to but I haven't been to one yet.
That's okay. I'm sure that's going to be like the best one ever. So it'll be a perfect one to get you into them. And then what is the best piece of business advice you've ever received.
Action creates clarity. Oh, I like that. Yeah, because when I started my business, it was one step in front of the other. I didn't have a huge vision, everything planned out. I stepped forward, I took one course I met you, I looked at what you did, and I said, this, this is what I want to do. I applied for a job. I didn't work out. I kept moving forward one step
at a time. I love that. Okay, and last question, and I never let y'all know that I'm going to ask this question. What is your favorite part of Serve Scale Soar?
Oh, the relationships with the other members. They have become like a family to me. They are the ones that if I'm having a bad day, that's who I call.
I love this. I love this. Okay, well, Jen, thank you so much for being on and chatting with us. I know this is going to inspire so many people and your story is just so incredible. And we're less than so let's see eight months, five Figure months. So what's your next goal?
I want to hit a six figure year.
Yes. Okay. So for a six figure year, everyone, because I feel like I need to clarify this because people just do not do the math. Right, right at 400 a month will get you a six figure year. So you're already like 2020 is your year for that six figures? I know it's coming. Yep. I'm so excited that I could be part of your journey. And thank you so much for coming on. And where can my listeners find you?
They can find me on Facebook at Jen Myers Consulting, or they can also find me on LinkedIn or Instagram.
Perfect. And we'll link up all those social channels below and all the programs that Jen has talked about throughout the entire chat. So thanks so much, Jen, and we will chat next time.
Wow, wow, wow, that was amazing. Are y'all just like blown away by Jen? Because I am a A lot of the story I knew, but a lot of it I didn't, from a failing marriage to a thriving marriage because of her business. That is not only changing her life that's changing her kids lives that is changing so many. And I know many of you are out there listening in like, this is me. That's my situation. And what if you just stepped up into the business owner, you know you are and sore and what it can do not only financially, but also what it can do for your marriage, your family, your kids. And Jen is just an example of that and in less than eight months created a five figure business. Ah, I love that. And so if you love this episode, please reach out to Jen give her a shout out.
